Jazz Ensemble Competition

The 36th annual Jazz Ensemble Competition will be held on Friday, May 4th in the Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre on the Shenandoah University campus. The bands compete in three classifications which are determined by student enrollment in Grades 7-12. Bands perform 20 minutes of music of their own selection.
The Winchester Award is given annually to the outstanding ensemble participating in the competition. Additional awards are presented to the first- and second-place bands in each classification and to each band receiving a superior rating. ADMISSION IS FREE! The doors will open at 10:30 am with the first performance at 11:00.
Applications must be accompanied by a nonrefundable application fee of $15.00 Applications received without the application fee will be considered incomplete and returned. Payment in U.S. dollars please.
Applications will be processed as they are received. Consideration of applications will be subject to available space in each event.
A Director’s Handbook will be sent to the Director of each accepted band. This Handbook is a complete guide including maps, diagrams, instructions and sample adjudication forms.
The application fee is not refundable. Refunds of the entry fee will be paid in full for cancellations received prior to May 1st. There will be NO REFUND for cancellations received after May 1st.
Sweepstakes Award Information
The band receiving the highest average band score in the Grand Feature Parade, plus their average score in a minimum of two other band competition events, will be the Sweepstakes Award winner. Auxiliary units or individual awards will not be considered.
The Sweepstakes Award winner will receive a trophy, be the Honor Band for next year, and will be featured in next year’s Band Brochure.

Overall – Regardless of Class:
Winchester Award – 1st Place Overall: George Washington Middle School
President’s Award – 2nd Place Overall: Fort Hill High School
Director’s Award – 3rd Place Overall: Martinsburg South Middle School (Group 2)
By classification, beginning with Class C and concluding with Class A.
Competition starts at 8:00 a.m.
Limited to one band per school.
$100.00 per band.
Determined by school enrollment in grades 10-12.
– Class A 1401 or more
– Class B 701-1400
– Class C 700 or fewer
– Ensembles may compete in a higher classification than enrollment indicates, but not in a lower classification. Middle school and junior high school bands perform for ratings and comments only.
Each ensemble must play a minimum of ten, but not more than twenty minutes of music. There is no required musical program. However, programs are expected to be well balanced and provide sufficient variety for valid adjudication (for example: Swing Tune, Ballad, Jazz/Rock Tune).
By three adjudicators.
Ensembles receiving a Rating I will receive an award for that accomplishment. Ensembles receiving I and II ratings will be eligible for the following awards:
- The Winchester Cup for the outstanding ensemble.
- The President’s Award for the ensemble achieving the second highest point total regardless of classification.
- The Director’s Award for the ensemble achieving the third highest point total regardless of classification.
First, Second and Third place awards are presented in each classification. Ensembles will receive individual score sheets and a cassette recording of each judge’s comments.
NOTE: Ticket prices are subject to change. Online ticket sales end on April 26, 2018, after this time all tickets must be purchased at the Official Festival Store, or at the event (if available).
