Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® President Barry Carper follows tradition by honoring a worthy person of long time importance to the Bloom. This year’s first pin is awarded to Donna Saville, Festival Office Manager, whose knowledge and love of the Festival have made her an integral part of more than 40 Festivals. The 92nd Festival begins Friday, April 26 and runs through Sunday, May 6.
The first pinning was in 1981 by the late David Shetler, President of the Festival that year. It was awarded to Sen. Harry F Byrd, Jr to honor him for all his help with the many years of the Festival.
From this date forward many pinnings have left a lasting legacy for the recipient. Not every year is a pin awarded, but usually! Past recipients who have been honored with the pin which depicts that theme of that year’s festival include along with Senator Byrd: Arthur “Buddy” Dunlap (pastpresident), Benjamin Arthur, a page in the court that year (great grandson of the first Queen Elizabeth Steck Arthur), Terry Seal (City of Winchester Dept Head), Captain Doug Watson (liaison to Festival with police departments), Dr. James Davis, Barry Lee, Dr. Tracy Fitzsimmons, Liz Minor (former Mayor of Winchester), etc.
The pinning is a symbol for the theme as well as a way to remind folks of the upcoming Festival with its 40 plus events, 2000+ volunteers, and 10 days of celebrations. Wearing a pin says “I am a part of the APPLE BLOSSOM FAMILY.”
