There was a time when the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® thought that it could rest easily for many years when a Dance Party concept caught on with the Bloom Nation; but, in the 21st century, the world moves quickly; and, daily sources of entertainment can be counted in the thousands. The Festival has experimented with a wide variety of Dance Party concepts in recent years. Many of the Festival’s show bands have offered Motown music during their shows; but, the Festival has never offered a Dance Party structured strictly around Motown music. For 2019, Festival Organizers decided to retire the Caribbean Nights Dance Party for now, and offer the new Allstate Motown Dance Party on Thursday night, May 2nd, 2019, from 8:00pm to midnight, in the Tolley Dental Entertainment Zone, at the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center at Shenandoah University. Never to be accused of doing anything halfway, the Festival, through its agents, has reached into the New York City Metropolitan Area, a massive source of a broad selection of top-notch entertainment, to book “Shadows of the 60s: A Tribute to Motown” to headline this new event. The band’s web site states:
Shadows of the 60s” pays tribute to the tremendous legacy of The Four Tops, the Temptations, and the Supremes; paying careful tribute and performing hits spanning several decades. Now, triple the memories and excitement with our Tribute to Motown’s Super Groups. Stunning choreography & costumes! Three Super Groups on one stage with a grand finale featuring the music of Motown’s Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Martha Reeves, Junior Walker, and more! “Shadows of The 60’s” – Truly a concert for everyone! And, just added: A “Friendship Train” tribute to Gladys Night and the Pips.
The Allstate Motown Dance Party is one of many excellent Festival events that will be held in the Tolley Dental Entertainment Zone, at the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center at Shenandoah University. The Wilkins Center is a beautifully-designed, spacious facility of approximately 70,000 square feet [three-and-a-half times the size of the Festival’s old Event Tent]; and, the Tolley Dental Entertainment Zone is, to state it simply, whatever part of the Wilkins Center the Festival is using for each of its events. The Wilkins Center is, primarily, an indoor athletic facility; and, Festival President, Barry Carper, has appointed a special committee this year to work on “personalizing” this space and enhancing its human scale for the Festival’s events.
