The 2016 Partlow Insurance Sports Breakfast, presented by Grange Insurance, will not only feature a “natural” athlete with a storied career in Cal Ripken, Jr.; but, it will also feature an athlete whose career would usually be described with words more like “workmanlike” and “journeyman.” But, this, in itself, means that this is an athlete who worked hard at consistently improving his craft; who persevered; who stayed in shape; who made the most of his opportunities; and, who over time, put together a very solid and commendable professional sports’ resume. Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® President, Jim Douglas, is pleased to add the name of NBA veteran, Larry Robinson, to the growing roster of sports stars featured at the 2016 Sports Breakfast.
Larry Robinson is a native of Bossier City, Louisiana. Collegiately, Larry played two seasons at Eastern Oklahoma State College in 1986 and 1987; and, then, two seasons at Centenary College of Louisiana in 1988 and 1989. After his collegiate career, he went on to play professionally with eight different NBA teams during the period from 1990 to 2002: the Washington Bullets, the Golden State Warriors, the Boston Celtics, the Houston Rockets, the Vancouver Grizzlies, the Atlanta Hawks, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the New York Knicks. He also played professionally in the CBA [the Continental Basketball Association]; the IBL [the International Basketball League]; and, the USBL [the United States Basketball League]. Always seeking opportunities, he also played abroad in France, Spain, the Philippines, Venezuela and Puerto Rico.
As a professional basketball player in the NBA, Larry expertly filled the role of a 6’-3” shooting guard for 12 years. It was during these times that Larry acquired much of the necessary skill set for a successful life: determination, teamwork, and leadership. His career highlights include winning the NBA Championship with the Houston Rockets in 1994; and, receiving the Atlantic Suns Conference “Player of the Year” in 1990. Being raised by a single mom, and growing up with very little in the material sense, Larry understands the importance of community and the role that friends and extended family played in his success. Not only did basketball shape him as a young man; but, through the sport, he was able to acquire many of the values that made the transition into the business world extremely natural for Larry. To quote from his official biography: “As a leader, he inspires others with his hard work and motivation. With a big heart and a strong passion for helping others, he dedicates a large part of his time giving back to the community. To know Larry is to know that family is the most important thing to him. You will soon learn that he is far more excited to talk about his children [and, particularly his up-and-coming rising-basketball-star son, Larry Robinson III], than his own accomplishments. Larry, his fiancé Flecia, and their children live in Dallas, Texas, where Larry is the Vice President of V-Tabs.
Larry Robinson’s appearance at the 2016 Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is sponsored by Winchester Moose Lodge #1283; and, the Festival gratefully acknowledges that Sponsorship. The Moose Lodge also contracts with the Festival to host and cater the Partlow Insurance Sports Breakfast, presented by Grange Insurance; and, the Moose Lodge also hosts the myPotential at Home Oldies Rock ‘n’ Roll Dance. The Lodge is donating parking space to the Festival’s employees at the Official Souvenir Store and Ticket Outlet, which is right across the street from the Lodge; and, graciously weathered the storm this past Monday morning when hundreds of shoppers descended on the Festival Store in search of hard-to-get tickets, and availed themselves of the Lodge’s massive parking lot. The Moose Lodge is a convenient landmark in Old Town Winchester; and, the Festival is happy to be able to partner with the Membership. Unfortunately, tickets to the Sports Breakfast sold remarkably quickly after the announcement of Cal Ripken, Jr., as Sports Marshal; and, no more remain.
