On Tuesday, March 18, Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® President Lou Ann Thompson presented the official souvenir pin for the 87th Festival to local radio personality Barry Lee and Winchester resident Barbara Simmons. The souvenir pin reflects the theme for the this year’s Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®, “The Land of Pink and Green.”
In 2007, Simmons wrote Bloom-related lyrics to the tune of the Beatles classic “Yellow Submarine,” renaming her song “The Land of Pink and Green.” Simmons is a member of TOPS, “Take Off Pounds Sensibly,” and attended a club conference in 2007 where the theme colors were pink and green. Simmons immediately thought of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® and woke up early the next morning with the lyrics in her head.
A loyal listener of Barry Lee and the WINC Wake-Up Show on 92.5 FM every morning, Simmons sent Lee an e-mail explaining her new song. Lee tweaked the words a bit and then began playing the new song on his radio show. Lee also uses the song each year to kick off the Queen’s Dinner during the Festival. A long-time supporter of the Festival, Lee serves as a commentator and announcer during the parades each year.
“Who would have thought that my little ditty would make it this far?” Simmons said. “I thought it was a cute idea that would be a one-time thing. I never expected to hear it year after year.”
The 87th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is scheduled for April 25 though May 4. The Official Festival Souvenir Store and Ticket Outlet opens on Monday, March 31, at 10 a.m., at The Railroad District at 302 North Cameron Street, Winchester, VA.
